Dr. Muriel Asseburg

Dr. Muriel Asseburg is a Senior Fellow in the Africa and Middle East Research Group at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). She studied political science, economics, and international law at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, where she received her PhD in 2000 with a thesis on Blocked Self-Determination: Palestinian State- and Nation-Building during the Interim Period (after the Oslo I Accords in 1993). From October 2006 to June 2012, she headed the research group "Middle East and Africa" at the SWP and was subsequently head of the project "Elite Change and New Social Mobilization in the Arab World" until 2015 and of the project "The Fragmentation of Syria" in 2014/2015. She has been a member of the advisory board of "Mediterranean Politics" since May 2017.
