Food for Thought - 20 Years of the Right to Food

Dear Readers,

The right to food is a human right. More than 170 countries have committed to realising this right by joining the UN Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. However, the reality is quite different: 733 million people are suffering from hunger worldwide. To mark the 20th anniversary of the FAO's Voluntary Guidelines on the Right to Food, the spotlight is on global progress and ongoing challenges of securing this fundamental human right.

What does it take to turn the political goals of the right to food into reality? The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the German Institute for Human Rights, the Committee on World Food Security and the Right to Food Coalition Kenya discuss these questions.

Liebe Leser*innen,

Das Recht auf Nahrung ist ein Menschenrecht. Zu dessen Umsetzung haben sich mehr als 170 Staaten mit ihrem Beitritt zum UN-Pakt über wirtschaftliche, soziale und kulturelle Rechte verpflichtet. Doch in der Realität sieht die Situation ganz anders aus: 733 Millionen Menschen hungern weltweit. Anlässlich des 20-jährigen Jubiläums der Freiwilligen Leitlinien zum Recht auf Nahrung stehen die Fortschritte und die aktuellen Herausforderungen bei der Sicherung dieses Menschenrechts im Mittelpunkt.

Doch was braucht es, um die politischen Ziele des Rechts auf Nahrung in die Realität umzusetzen? Das Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, das Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft, das Deutsche Institut für Menschenrechte, das Komitee für Welternährungssicherheit und die Right to Food Coalition Kenia diskutieren diese Fragen.
