Food for Thought - towards Halfway and Beyond

Dear Readers,

At the halfway mark of the 2030 Agenda and two years after the UN Food System Summit 2021, a stocktaking moment was held in Rome to analyze the progress of countries on the commitments to action in transforming food systems. Dr Harry Hoffmann, TMG Think Tank, and Nathalie Demel, Welthungerhilfe, were on site and take stock as well.

Dr Fatima Olanike Kareem, AKADEMIYA2063, and Dr Olayinka Idowu Kareem, University of Hohenheim, discuss the persistently high agricultural prices and their negative impact, particularly on developing countries. How climate-resilient and low-emission development of the livestock sector can look like is illustrated by three papers by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ, ILRI and World Bank. The BMZ's CompensACTION initiative provides incentives for climate protection through a compensation approach rewarding smallholders for their contribution to ecosystems conservation.

Liebe Leser*innen,

zur Halbzeit der Agenda 2023 und zwei Jahre nach dem UN Food System Summit 2021 wurde in Rom Bilanz gezogen, welche Fortschritte die Länder bei der Umsetzung der Verpflichtungen zur Transformation der Ernährungssysteme gemacht haben. Dr. Harry Hoffmann, TMG Think Tank, und Nathalie Demel, Welthungerhilfe, waren vor Ort und ziehen ebenfalls Bilanz.

Dr. Fatima Olanike Kareem, AKADEMIYA2063, und Dr. Olayinka Idowu Kareem, Universität Hohenheim, diskutieren die anhaltend hohen Agrarpreise und die negativen Auswirkungen, die insbesondere Entwicklungsländer treffen. Wie eine klimaresiliente und emissionsarme Entwicklung des Tierhaltungssektors aussehen kann, zeigen drei Berichte des Bundesentwicklungsministeriums (BMZ) und von GIZ, ILRI und der Weltbank. Zudem für mehr Klimaschutz: Die CompensACTION Initiative des BMZ, die mit einem Kompensationsansatz Kleinbäuer*innen für ihren Beitrag zum Erhalt der Ökosysteme entlohnt.
