How can we reach more people with successful approaches to food security? In Berlin, an international conference organized by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationaler Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) addressed this issue.

There are windows that close after 1000 days. That may seem like a long time. But by then, crucial decisions are made that affect the future of an entire lifetime. The undersupply of micronutrients such as iron, zinc or vitamin A during this period - from the beginning of pregnancy until the age of two - has a lifelong impact on people's health and quality of life: The development of mental abilities is impaired, and physical growth is limited. Opportunities to learn and later pursue a profession can be significantly reduced as a result. The development opportunities of entire countries are thereby impaired.
To improve this starting point, the GIZ global project "Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience to Food Crises" has been working on several aspects since 2014. The causes of hunger and malnutrition are manifold: poverty, crises, conflicts, overpopulation and natural disasters are compounded by a lack of access to health services, healthy food, clean drinking water and sanitary facilities. People also often lack knowledge about healthy eating and simple but effective hygiene measures. Combating hunger and malnutrition must therefore be broad-based: The program links measures from different sectors, such as agriculture, health, education, social security and WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene). The focus is primarily on women and young children, who are usually particularly severely affected by malnutrition. The program will run until 2026 - time to take stock. How can countries learn from each other's experiences and scale up food security solutions? That means making them accessible to more people and ensuring their effectiveness in the long term. As in India, for example, where the strategy devised by the project to manage community gardens of up to 10 hectares is now being implemented by state partners. Malawi is also working to improve access to healthy food for young people. The director of nutrition, HIV and AIDS for the Ministry of Health in Malawi, Dr. Felix Phiri, talks about diversifying the country's diet more and initiating changes in consumption patterns.

In Togo, educational sessions that teach hands-on everything about healthy meals and how to prepare them have been so effective that rural health centers have incorporated them into their work plan budgets and now run them independently. In Cambodia, too, the piloting of multi-sectoral working groups on food security and nutrition was so successful that the government institutionalized them nationwide. In addition, regional and municipal actors in the partner countries are being advised to integrate nutrition-related measures into their development plans. This ensures the long-term continuation of these measures.
