Agricultural policy belongs in prime time

By

Under "Food4Transformation," stakeholders and experts from around the world will still be able to discuss issues and report on topics related to food security, sustainable agriculture and rural development. Four interviews kick off the relaunch, asking the same questions from different perspectives. Dr Julia Köhn, Chair of the German AgriFood Society, points out in the interview: Only if innovation and transformation are profitable in the medium term can they close the food gap in the long term.

Boundaries between agriculture, entrepreneurship, investors and scientists need to be bridged in order to act together and overcome uncertainties. © GIZ / Johannes Funk

By Dr. Julia Köhn

Dr. Julia Köhn is shaping the transformation of global agricultural & food systems as a founder, entrepreneur and investor.
As Chair of the German AgriFood Society, she represents the interests of German AgriTech, FoodTech and BioTech startups and is particularly committed to internationally competitive funding for High & DeepTech startups in the field of agri-food transformation.

All contributions

What does the transformation of agricultural and food systems mean to you?
In order to be able to close the global food gap, we must immediately merge forward-looking high and deep technology, traditional knowledge about soil, animals and plants and lived farm practices.

How do you see your role in the transformation of agricultural and food systems?
During my time as a scientist, I studied the nature of uncertainty. It is a combination of uncertainty, contingency, and reflexivity that takes us to the limits of individual human intelligence.

Only as a community in solidarity will we be able to deal with uncertainty and take action, even though no action will get us to our destination with certainty.

Together we can dare to take risks under uncertainty, as individuals only if we are overconfident, crazy, naive or a combination of all. It is precisely this uncertainty that shapes the future of our food.

It is my job to bridge the boundaries between agriculture, entrepreneurship, investors and scientists so that we can act together.

What needs to be done in the future to drive the transformation?
Scientists, venture capitalists, land and forest owners and farmers need to join forces to fundamentally, holistically, and at scale realize the fundamentals of food production within planetary limits. “Bullerbü-Farming” is not the solution to feed the growing world population. It is the role of politics to support the responsible parties, to relieve the actors and to mitigate the natural insecurity in food production through the solidarity community.

Producing sufficient and healthy food is a public good and therefore just as important as internal security, peace or education for our community.

This needs to be reflected in a more serious and informed discourse on agri & food systems. Agricultural policy belongs in prime time.

At the same time, market incentives for the production and purchase of healthy and climate-friendly food must be strengthened through the implementation of concepts such as true cost accounting and true cost pricing.

Only if innovation and transformation are profitable in the medium term will they be able to close the food gap in the long term.
