The transformation of global agrifood systems holds significant potential to deliver substantial benefits for people, the planet, and long-term prosperity. This is the central premise of the White Paper, which was officially launched at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Seville. The publication calls for a fundamental shift toward large-scale, systemic investments in agrifood systems – a sector that employs more than one-third of the global workforce and sits at the intersection of climate resilience, economic development, public health, and food security.
The global community needs a new financing model, to meet the interconnected challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and rural poverty. One that aligns public and private capital, leverages innovation, and positions agrifood systems at the centre of sustainable development.
At the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), the Donor Platform launched a White Paper calling for a fundamental shift in the financing of agrifood systems. With hidden costs amounting to US$12 trillion annually – and less than one percent of global climate finance reaching small-scale agriculture – the paper stresses the urgency to focus on de-risking, work on collaborative agreements and systemic reforms.
Developed by the Donor Platform under the leadership of a High-Level Advisory Group, the White Paper outlines a practical agenda to unlock the capital, partnerships and innovation needed to drive such change at scale, presenting six priority areas for immediate action. It offers a roadmap for governments, donors, financial institutions, and the private sector to act decisively and collectively.
