Experiences, results, and successes from twelve years of collaboration – the compendium is a modular reference source that brings together twelve years of experience from the Green Innovation Centers in 16 countries. It documents successes, challenges, and lessons learned, and makes consolidated technical expertise accessible to practitioners and policymakers.
The compendium is a comprehensive reference source that summarizes the experiences, results, and achievements from more than twelve years of collaboration under the GIZ Global Project Green Innovation Centers in the Agriculture and Food Sector (GV GIAE), implemented within the framework of the Special Initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems” (SI AGER). The aim of the compendium is to preserve this knowledge in the long term and make it usable for different target groups.
The work of the Green Innovation Centers was firmly rooted in rural areas throughout the entire implementation period. Wherever issues of food security, income generation, and future prospects were particularly relevant, new approaches were tested in close cooperation with local partners. The focus was on innovations in agricultural production, the development and strengthening of value chains, and close collaboration with government actors, research institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Many of the approaches developed led to improved production methods, more stable market linkages, and new income opportunities for the participating stakeholders.
Evaluation studies and endline surveys show clear qualitative improvements and measurable progress. That these results were achieved despite very different framework conditions and a wide range of challenges is due in no small part to the broad partner network that was built up over the years.
The compendium fulfills a dual function. On the one hand, it documents successes, challenges, and lessons learned, making them accessible to a professional audience. On the other hand, it serves as a foundation for organizational learning within GIZ. As the largest project under the Special Initiative “Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems,” the global project provides important impulses and entry points for the design of future initiatives.
The compendium is designed as a modular, flexibly usable reference source. The individual thematic chapters are self-contained and can be used independently of one another. The compendium guides readers through the key areas of work, approaches, and activities of the Green Innovation Centers and provides a concise overview of each topic. The content is complemented by link boxes featuring additional knowledge products such as videos, factsheets, manuals, and self-learning courses. These include both materials accessible internally within GIZ (marked with a house symbol) and publicly available content (marked with a browser symbol).
The first part of the compendium presents the thematic areas of work, while the second part provides insights into the 16 country packages and demonstrates how innovations were implemented on the ground.
The annex also includes factsheets presenting prepared results of the endline studies at the global level as well as for all country packages (in English). The compendium itself is available in German, French, and English and invites readers to explore consolidated knowledge, deepen their understanding of experiences, and gain inspiration for their own work. We hope you enjoy discovering it and wish you an insightful read!
