Whether in the supermarket or online shop – most of the products we use every day have travelled a long way, which is usually not visible to us consumers. This makes it all the more important to make the people and the conditions under which they work visible. To ensure a healthy and resilient environment, the Supply Chain Act was introduced at EU level - a decisive step towards global fairness. However, this change will only succeed if the economy also takes responsibility.
The following six projects show how well this can work. Each of them sets a good example in the respective sector - whether on the topic of gender, climate, health, biodiversity or education. Public institutions and private companies are working hand in hand to achieve concrete improvements for people and the environment along the supply chain.
1. Klima: Agroforstwirtschaft da, wo der Pfeffer wächst
Sustainable nutrition starts with the spices in our kitchens – such as pepper, which is often grown in monocultures in Indonesia, exacerbating the climate crisis. Balanced agroforestry benefits both resilience to weather events and profitability by diversifying farmers' incomes. In the "aGROWforests for Sustainable Spices" project in Indonesia, pepper farmers are cooperating with Verstegen Spices & Sauces, Fairfood, PT CAN and PT Klumbayan Gold Farm to implement climate and environmentally friendly alternatives. Trained changemakers show how agroforestry can be practised on demonstration plots. The result: pepper plantations that are less harmful to the climate and more resilient.
In Rwanda, Kenya and Indonesia, it is mostly women who form the backbone of the tea harvest. However, they are usually left out of decision-making processes and leadership positions. This is precisely where the "Our Tea, Our Voice" project comes in. Together with local tea associations and companies such as Twinings, Ringtons and the East Frisian Tea Company, the project promotes the self-determination of women on three levels: individually through self-confidence and empowerment training, socially through changing power relations in the social environment and structurally through new workplace guidelines and the questioning of social norms. In cooperation with local women's rights organisations, the local women themselves determine which measures make the most sense in their environment.
3. Health: Healthy conditions for cocoa and producers
Access to medical care is not a matter of course – not even in the cocoa-growing regions of Côte d'Ivoire, the world's largest cocoa exporting country. The pilot project “CHEER – Cocoa Health and Empowerment for Economic Resilience” aims to change this. The chocolate brand Tony's Chocolonely, which is already committed to a fair and transparent chocolate industry, is cooperating with the NGO Elucid Health. The aim is to strengthen the health and economic resilience of cocoa producers. The project achieves this by providing access to health insurance, promoting high-quality medical services, strengthening financial independence, supporting state healthcare systems and improving data collection and reporting. In this way, Tony's not only leads the way for other chocolate brands in terms of fairness and transparency but also contributes to a reliable healthcare system for cocoa producers in Côte d'Ivoire.
4. Living Income: Organic cotton for fair sneakers
In north-east Brazil, many small farmers struggle with precarious living conditions and unreliable yields. The "Cotton in Agroecological Intercropping"project is committed to providing farming families in this semi-arid region with a living income. The French shoe brand VEJA supports this project by supporting the conversion to organic standards. It buys the organic cotton directly from the producers at fair prices in order to process it into yarn fabric, laces and uppers for VEJA sneakers. In collaboration with Diaconia, an NGO that supports local smallholder farmers, and GIZ, the partnership ensures guaranteed purchases and a living income, including for other products. The project also has a positive impact on reducing social inequality in the farming communities and on food security through ecological regeneration of the landscape. This creates a promising perspective for the future.
5. Biodiversity: Sustainable rubber in the rainforest and on the road
Indonesia is the world's second largest producer of natural rubber. In the district of Kapuas Hulu on Borneo, the production of natural rubber sets standards for sustainable production. Here, tyre manufacturer Continental is working with GIZ and other partners on a catalogue of criteria for sustainable cultivation. The focus is not only on teaching modern methods of rubber production, but also on the traceability of the supply chain from cultivation to the tyre factory. A win-win situation: the income of small farmers has increased by an average of 27 per cent since the start of the project, Continental is using the responsibly sourced natural rubber in its first products and valuable forest and peatlands are being preserved in the project area in Indonesia. Continental aims to achieve a 100 per cent sustainable supply chain by 2050 at the latest. A cooperation that protects biodiversity and creates social security.
6. Education: Getting change rolling with football
In the "From Field to Fanshop" project, the sustainable textile company BRANDS Fashion, Fairtrade Germany and nine football clubs in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bundesliga have joined forces to bring fairly produced cotton products to German fanshops. The project in Gujarat, India, not only creates training programmes and provides support in switching to the production of organic cotton for smallholder farms. Together with the NGO Youth Football Club Rurka Kalan, the project also creates sports trainings for children and young people from the neighbouring cotton farming communities. These training sessions not only promote exercise and team spirit but also raise knowledge about environmental protection and social issues. They strengthen the children's self-confidence and promote gender equality. Teachers, parents and children thus become multipliers for sustainable development – from field to the classroom.
